This is the end of the 1st lay in of color in muted tones, about halfway to completion for this piece, will put aside to dry and work on some other compositions.

“Herring Lassies mending nets” – Work in Progress, Oil on Canvas, 40 x 30 inches. This is a black and raw sienna Frottee on a blue/black Imprimatura.

Thousands of girls from the Scottish Highlands and islands worked in the Herring industry. They always worked in a tight knit crew of three. Herring gutting was a valuable seasonal source of employment for the girls and women.

The backdrop for the Herring Lassies series of paintings is Newhaven harbour. I will initiate another couple of paintings and then work on them all concurrently.

“Herring Lassies at the Harbour wall” – Work in Progress, Oil on Canvas, 48 x 36 inches.

This is the start of my Herring Lassies project. The backdrop for this series of paintings is Newhaven harbour. This is a black and raw sienna Frottee on a blue/black Imprimatura.

I plan to start a number of paintings to work on concurrently. Thanks to Nicola, Kim, Aga, Clare and the Scottish Fisheries Museum.

Portrait Commision – Aleksandra Stattin

Aleksandra at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh

This is a portrait commission of the lovely Aleksandra Stattin. The setting is the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. It’s oil on canvas, 40 x 30 inches.

Aleksandra is a stage and screen actress based in New York. It was a great pleasure to have the opportunity to meet and paint her. The portrait commissioned by her husband Gordon will be hung in their Manhattan apartment.

“Pieta” – Oil on Linen, 16 x 12 inches. Think I will leave this as is for the moment. Maybe more glaze and scumble later.

This painting is a head study of the Virgin Mary from the sculpture of La Pieta by Michaelangelo in the Vatican in Rome.

This painting is a head study of Mary from Michaelangelo’s Pieta sculpture in the Vatican in Rome.

Dawn -1st painting

“Dawn” – Oil on Canvas, 37 x 37 inches, Work in Progress. This is the 1st painting using Cremnitz White, a warm and cold black and emerald green. Will try to leave some of the glow of the raw sienna imprimatura as I proceed.

This painting is based on the sculpture of Dawn by Michaelangelo for the tomb of Lorenzo de’ Medici, in the Medici Chapel in Florence.
