Postcards for Sick Kids 2012

Tuesday, October 30th, 2012

I have donated a little 8 x 6 inch oil painting for the bi-annual Postcards for Sick Kids exhibition. The private view for this is on Thursday 1st November in Edinburgh at Lyon & Turnbull. I’m afraid I can’t post an image of the painting as all work is anonymously displayed. There will be over 200 works on display by a wide range of artists, all priced at £300 on the first night.

You can find more about this fund raising exhibition here:

This is the finished painting of  “Druantia by the River”. Druantia was Queen of the Druids. In Celtic Mythology she was the symbol of Protection, Knowledge, Creativity, Passion, Sexual Activities, Fertility, Growth, Trees and Forests.

This painting will be part of my solo exhibition next year at the Dundas Street Gallery in Edinburgh.

Oil on canvas, 60 x 30 inches. The backdrop is Roslin Glen beside the river Esk, a beautiful spot where there used to be an old gun powder factory which was active during the Napoleonic wars and not far from the wonderful Rosslyn Chapel. The model is the captivating Ulorin Vex.

I will be working on a Top Secret portrait commission for the next couple of weeks and will not be able to post images…

Herbert James Draper Study

Monday, October 1st, 2012

[SinglePic not found]

This is my finished study of Herbert James Draper’s (1864 – 1920) painting “By summer seas” (circa 1912). I like his work very much. He was one of the great mythological painters of his time.  The original painting sold at Bonham’s a few years ago for £350,000. It seems the model was Hilda Edgell whom he used often and made some lovely drawings and paintings of.  I enjoyed making a study of this, the model is beautiful and the paint handling was interesting, especially the depths in the flesh tones, very similar to the approach of the old Italian masters. The study was a nice lead in to my current series of paintings especially those of Ulorin Vex.

This painting will be part of my solo exhibition next year at the Dundas Street Gallery in Edinburgh. It’s Oil on canvas, 20 x 16 inches.
